Glossary for those who are not up to par! For those who are, just move on. Back to Basics Vodafone, BT Cellnet, Orange and One2one are all networks. They provide the service or line, not the phones. Each network is basically a collection of radio towers all over the country transmitting people's calls. The make of phone you have, comes from the manufacturers Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson (or what ever you use.) They provide the phones for you and the networks. Here Goes Analogue Early UK mobile phones all used analogue technology. Its still available on Vodafone and Cellnet, although 99% of people buy digital phones now. You get some minutes included each month. The phones are normally ones at the cheaper end of the scale. Coverage The strength of the radio signal being transmitted and picked up in the area you are in. Click here for coverage maps & tariff guides for the networks. Digital Replacing the old analogue system, digital technology converts sound through a computer and passes it on, making sound quality far superior than the old analogue system. Digital also offers other advantages, such as cheaper call charges, less chance of eavesdroppers listening in on your calls and offers you many more features and functions on your phone. All networks offer digital phones. Dual-Band Vodafone, Cellnet and most other networks through out the world use GSM900MHz to transmit signals, Orange, one2one and a few other networks run off GSM1800MHz (also known as PCN.) A lot of newer phones are 'dual-band' and can use both frequencies, ideal for the jet setter. EFR EFR stands for (Enhanced Full Rate) now offered on many new phones, means sound quality is much clearer and less distorted. If you imagine your phone conversation is a piece of paper and you scrunched it up and gave it to someone, when they open it up the paper is very creased.
