Glossary for those who are not up to par! For those who are, just move on.

Back to Basics

Vodafone, BT Cellnet, Orange and One2one are all networks. They provide the service or line, not the phones. Each network is basically a collection of radio towers all over the country transmitting people's calls.

The make of phone you have, comes from the manufacturers Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson (or what ever you use.) They provide the phones for you and the networks.

Here Goes

Analogue

Early UK mobile phones all used analogue technology. Its still available on Vodafone and Cellnet, although 99% of people buy digital phones now.

All Inclusive Deal/All-In-One

Instead of paying a monthly line rental, all networks now offer the chance to buy a whole year of line rental up front for a discounted rate, therefore all you pay for each month are the calls you make. You get some minutes included each month. The phones are normally ones at the cheaper end of the scale. You are offered a repeat year for an even more competitive rate than the first year, as you already have your phone. Upgrading a phone from one of these packages is near on impossible, if you have a package like this and would like a new handset for any reason click here

Bluetooth

A revolutionary new low power radio technology that connects electronic devices without the need for a single cable. Data and voice can now be exchanged at ranges of up to 10 metres without having to line them up together. Ericsson have a Bluetooth hands free set that is wireless. Many more devices will use this technology over the coming years.

Call Divert

Getting your incoming calls diverted to another number of your choice, either your answer phone or another number. You can do this if you have no signal, no battery or any reason for convenience.

CLI (Caller Line Identification)

Also known as "caller display," where possible, the callers number will be displayed on your screen so you can decide whether or not to answer the call.

Coverage

The strength of the radio signal being transmitted and picked up in the area you are in. Click here for coverage maps & tariff guides for the networks.

Digital

Replacing the old analogue system, digital technology converts sound through a computer and passes it on, making sound quality far superior than the old analogue system. Digital also offers other advantages, such as cheaper call charges, less chance of eavesdroppers listening in on your calls and offers you many more features and functions on your phone. All networks offer digital phones.

Dual-Band

Vodafone, Cellnet and most other networks through out the world use GSM900MHz to transmit signals, Orange, one2one and a few other networks run off GSM1800MHz (also known as PCN.) A lot of newer phones are 'dual-band' and can use both frequencies, ideal for the jet setter.

EFR

EFR stands for (Enhanced Full Rate) now offered on many new phones, means sound quality is much clearer and less distorted. If you imagine your phone conversation is a piece of paper and you scrunched it up and gave it to someone, when they open it up the paper is very creased. If you folded the paper up neatly and gave it to someone, when its open out flat, its not as creased as the previous piece. EFR simplified!

Everyday 50

Everyone's talking about it. No not East Enders, but Everyday 50 from Orange. Its a new tariff aimed at off-peak users as they offer 50 minutes of off-peak calls everyday and calls after that are 1p per minute, with a per second billing system. This works out cheaper than using a BT phone, well that's not hard is it. Bear in mind that peak calls are a whopping 40p a minute.

GSM

Stands for (Global System for Mobile Communications) and is the term used for the technology standard of new mobile phones. Also used to tell the difference between networks.

Infra-red

Top end phones have an infra-red port built in. This can be used to send/receive data from another devise with an infra-red port without needing to link the two with a cable. You can also play 2 player snake, send business cards and graphics.

Keypad Lock/Key Guard

Most phones allow you to lock the keypad by pushing a button or to. This helps prevent buttons getting pushed by mistake when your phone is in your pocket or bag. Police urge us to use this handy feature as they get so many accidental calls by people who don't even know they rang.

Memory Effect

Batteries that are not recharged correctly suffer from loss of capacity and life expectancy. Mainly the Nicad and NiMH batteries suffer from this as Li-ion batteries are better quality.

Nicad

Also known as nickel-cadmium, either way it spells the bottom of the range battery. (But they are cheap.) It does not hold as much life as the other batteries and also suffers from memory effect when recharged incorrectly.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)

The standard battery supplied with general mobile phones. It has more capacity than a nicad battery of the same weight. These batteries should be run down flat before you recharge them, if you top the charge up half way through, you could effect the long term performance and life of the battery.

Lithium Iron (Li-ion)

The battery type used in top end phones, they are lighter and longer lasting than other batteries. You can also charge them at any time. To buy please click here

Lithium Polymer

This is the newest in state of the art battery technology, still very rare as yet, its a battery that can be molded to be any shape, it will give manufactures inspiration for some phat new designs.

Menu

The functions of a phone you use when you change something in your phone like a ringtone.

PCN

The variant of digital technology that One2one and Orange use, in industry terms, this is called GSM1800MHz

Phonebook

The place where all your phone numbers are stored in your phones memory.

Pocket Wallet

This new technology allows secure online shopping on the move.

Network/Service or Airtime Provider

Orange, One2one and Virgin sell their service direct to the public, whereas Vodafone and Cellnet sell their air time to Service Providers who then sell it onto us. There are many different service providers and they all offer different packages, so make sure you are happy with yours.

Orange Value Promise (OVP)

Popular for those who just love the best deal going. Orange believe that the tariffs available on their network are such good value for money, they now offer any of their competitors tariff on the Orange network, if you decide it suites you better. They match it like for like.

Prepay, Pay As You Go (PAYT)

A phone with no bills, contracts, credit checks or minimum age. You just buy the package that suits you and top up the phone with a credit voucher. The calls you make come out of the money you have credited on the phone. As all the networks are competing for your custom, calls are getting cheaper, and now most vouchers have no expiry date and last forever. These are ideal for the occasional user, youngsters and the under world as no details are required to use one.

Radiation

When people talk about the radiation that's transmitted through mobile phones, they don't mean it like the radiation from Chinoble, its a radio wave, much the same as the ones you get from using the kettle, tv or any other electrical device. It is a different level of radiation as its conducted by a different frequency.Anti radiation devices

Rythmic back light

When your phone rings, the backlight display flashes in accordance to the ring tone playing. (Available on latest Nokia phones) Like the 5210 see our handsets page for more.

Roaming

Some digital phones can be used abroad, whilst billed to their UK invoice. This is called roaming, its where a network uses another network to allow its customers to use their phone in a place where your default network has no coverage. Dual band phones offer the best roaming options.

Network/Service or Airtime Provider

Orange, One2one and Virgin sell their service direct to the public, whereas Vodafone and Cellnet sell their air time to Service Providers who then sell it onto us. There are many different service providers and they all offer different packages, so make sure you are happy with yours.

SIM Card

The electronic chip that holds all your details, like phone number and account details. You can take it out and use it in another compatible phone. Sim stands for 'Subscriber Identity Module'.

SIM Lock

A software designed to keep phones locked to the network they originated from, for example a Nokia 3310 on Orange only works with an Orange sim card in it unless it has been unlocked. To unlock your phone click here

SMS

Short Message Sending. This is your text messaging system that can be used with most new phones.

Standby

This is the amount of time that your phone can stay on for, without using it.

Subsidy

All phone prices are heavily subsidized when bought with a contract, the network then gets its money back through your contracted monthly bills.

T9 Predictive Text Input

A new technology used in many top to middle end new phones, its a built-in mini dictionary to help write messages faster. It works by you pressing each key once and it double guesses the word you are trying to write.

Talktime

The amount of time your phones battery can last whilst in calls.

Tariff

The way your call charges are organized, each tariff offers good deals for different user types.

Triple Band (Tri-Band)

A new advancement to a dual band phone, offering superior roaming in North America too, using their GSM1900MHz frequency.

Twin Sim Battery

A battery that has spaces for two sim cards to be held. So now you don't need to carry two phones around to have two numbers. Only available for a few models of phones.

UMTS

A third generation network standard that will deliver true multimedia to phones (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) promises greater capacity and higher data transfer rates.

Upgrades

Time to get a new phone, upgrading is big business, now over half the population has phones, the companies want you to buy newer ones that do more than just make and receive phone calls. When you buy a new phone, it is known as an upgrade.

Vibrate Alert

A phone or special battery pack that can vibrate as well as or instead of ringing, ideal for noisy and quiet places alike.

Voice Dial

Newer top end phones now have a 'voice dial' key that you program a number in, say the name to the phone and it dials the number for you without you going through your phone book.

Voicemail
