Since Oftel introduced number portability, which means you can
take your existing mobile phone number with you to any other network, providing your
contract is up and you pay the admin fees of around £30, the pressure has been
on them to regulate it in a fair way.
Obviously this seems great for the end user, you get fed up
with one network and take your phone number with you to another network that
suits you better and you have not had to change your number. Changing a company
mobile phone number can cost a lot in loss of business due to fewer calls because
the number has changed.
Well what happens then? As we should all be aware,
making phone calls from one network to another is very costly and now we do not
know what number belongs to what network and therefore you have no idea of the
call charge per minute.
So if you are on a network that offers free inclusive minutes
to other phones on the same network and you think of calling a number with the
same prefix or a number that you think your network provides, think again.
This is one area that Oftel have to sort out fast, as the
number of mobile phone users grow, so does the unnecessary call revenue
due to the same prefix phone number being spread across all networks.
Many believe Oftel should standardize all call rates to end
the confusion, I agree and so do many people, but I think something must be
done, even if its a recorded message before the phone rings that tells you what
network you are calling.
