WAP & GPRS

Amongst all the recent hype about WAP (wireless application protocol) many good things have come from it. Firstly its a good new fun executive toy that is available to all since its prepay launch. If you want to catch up on the latest news, weather, travel, sports or horoscopes and financial listings and data, its great (if your 7110 does not crash). It is after all a cut down version of HTML. On its launch, sites were limited and publicised in such a way that it was just like the internet at home. Of course its not that complex, but now there are 100s of great WAP sites waiting to be explored. There are now sites from pubs n clubs in your area, eating and drinking guides, banking, auctions and everything else.

Here is just a few good WAP sites to visit :

Really, whatever you or I make of it, its the platform to another level, the future of mobile communications as we know it. WAP is merely a warm up of what's to come. Until the future comes, the present brings it closer with the new GPRS system.

Waps Next? GPRS

Now that most major networks are supporting the new GPRS system and handsets of GPRS capabilities are more widely available, you could start to see a change in the way that we pay for our phones usage.

As we have seen, BT Cellnet, Vodafone and Orange have released new tariffs aimed at the GPRS user.

GPRS stands for (General Packet Radio Services) and allows mobile phones to connect to the internet using digital packets of information, rather than simply throwing out data over a cellular channel normally designed to deal with voice communications. Like the internet GPRS uses a basic data transmission technology known as internet protocol or IP.

The internet has been successful largely because it allows users to share the global networks resources. When users are not transmitting data on the internet - that is, when they're viewing web content, the data bandwidth can be used by other users.

Sharing resources on the internet is the main reason the web has exploded with growth so quickly. Its cheap to access and easy to use, as with GPRS instead of mobile phones using a network infrastructure originally designed for voice and data transmissions and connections it uses the IP transmissions standards, to allow loads more users to connect to the Net in a given area.example of a phone with GPRS

So, instead of  a single cellular mast being limited to a few dozen voice calls at any one time, several hundred GPRS data Calls can take place at the same time, only when data transmitting is in progress the network resources are being used.

This allows GPRS enabled mobiles to have an on-line session to the company network, open all the time ready to receive e-mails sent within the company network.

GPRS also allows more network resources to be linked together to allow web surfing speeds to be up there with your connection on your PC.
