Following the outrageous gun attack
on a 19 year old girl for her Nokia 3310 mobile phone, comes alarming
figures showing that in excess of 3,000 mobile phones are reported stolen
each month in London alone. The main targets are school children who are
often confronted by up to 40 other pupils for their prize possession.
Along with the great
boom in mobile phone use comes the equal boom in mobile phone crimes. A
staggering 15,000 handsets are believed to be stolen each month in the UK
alone. Mobile phone theft takes up one third of all street crime in Britain
& is soaring.
The main prime
crime time
Police have seen a reoccurring
pattern in the time of day most of the thefts take place and surprisingly
enough, its in broad day-light. Children are targeted on their way to school, at
school and most of all on their way home from school, with the majority of all
thefts happen between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
But it does not
stop there
Nowadays, mobile phones are in such
high demand (for the right ones anyway) people will go to any lengths to get
them. This includes high- jacking a lorry full of Nokia's , injuring
the driver in the process and making off with so many phones, that there was £100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of these people.
Preventative
Measures
All the networks have finally come
together to help reduce crime by blocking it across all networks, once it
has been reported lost or stolen. There is also up to 7 years now for
stealing mobile phones.
It is pretty pointless to rob somebody
of their phone, as it will be barred and of no use to the thief.
